One million cockroaches flee China farm: report

At least one million cockroaches have escaped a farm in China where they were being bred for use in traditional medicine, a report said.

Disease control authorities have sent five investigators to the area to come up with a plan to stamp out the insects.

Farm owner Wang Pengsheng invested more than 100,000 yuan ($16,000) in 102 kilograms of Periplaneta americana eggs after spending six months developing a business plan, the report Friday said.

The cockroach is generally considered a pest, but believers in traditional Chinese medicine -- which uses both plants and animals, including endangered species -- say extracts from it can treat diseases including cancer, reduce inflammation and improve immunity.

By the time the greenhouse was damaged, more than 1.5 million cockroaches had hatched and were being fed food including "fruits and biscuits" every day, Wang was quoted as saying.

He had expected to make around 1,000 yuan profit for every kilogram of cockroaches sold, according to the report, but was now facing losses of hundreds of thousands of yuan.

Czech environment ministry sparks fury after spending end-of-year budget on 1,000 pairs of UNDERWEAR including knickers adorned with beaver.

As far as end-of-year budget spending goes, this is one decision some consider not only a waste of taxpayers' money... but also 'pants'.

The Czech Republic's environment ministry has sparked outrage after ordering 1,000 pairs of male and female underwear as its 2013 budget spend deadline fast approaches.

To make matters worse, the women's knickers have a picture of a beaver on them - a move that has been branded sexist, while the men's come adorned with a cormorant.

The Czech Republic's environment ministry has sparked outrage after ordering 1,000 pairs of male and female underwear, decorated with images of beavers and cormorants, as its 2013 budget spend deadline fast approaches

According to the department, the £18,000 purchasing spree, which also includes cufflinks, umbrellas, pencils, crayons and 6,000 pens, will serve to highlight its Czech Nature campaign and encourage people to take a more active role in environmental protection

However, green campaigners Hnuti Duha (Friends of the Earth Czech Republic) called the decision 'pathetic'

Saudi Arabia has turned down a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, accusing the world body of "double standards".

The Saudi foreign ministry said the UN needs to be reformed first.

It said the Security Council had failed in its duties towards Syria as well as in other world conflicts.

Saudi Arabia has previously expressed frustration at what it sees as an international failure to act on Syria, where it staunchly backs the rebels.

There has been no official reaction from the UN, but diplomats there expressed surprise at Riyadh's announcement.

Russia's foreign ministry called the move bewildering, and said Saudi Arabia's criticism of the UN Security Council about its actions over Syria "is particularly strange".

North Koreans are using the drug methamphetamine as a cheap alternative to hard to get medicines.

“Many people in the north are using (meth) for medicinal purposes,” said reporter Jason Strother. “The hospital systems are broken down and they don’t have the medication.”

Crystal meth made in laboratories in North Korea is flooding the world's drugs market, with shipments ferried through China to distribute across the globe.

In the U.S. police officers have intercepted batches of the highly addictive drug, that were bound for New York after being produced in Kim Jong-un's Communist state.

Analysis of the highly potent drugs - which come in the form of ice-like crystals which are smoked, to provide a powerful and near-immediate hit - showed they were up to 99 per cent pure.

Until recently, Denis Pushilin, chairman of the self-declared Supreme Council, was a salesman for a pyramid scheme that attracted millions of Russians and Ukrainians ("Financial pyramids are not forbidden and are not illegal," he said, explaining his involvement).

On Monday, the separatists called the first meeting of their Supreme Council, gathering in an auditorium in their headquarters. About 20 percent of the group was armed, carrying everything from hunting knives to assault rifles. A handful wore body armor. There was an abundance of homemade tattoos, a variety of camouflage and lots of tight black T-shirts.

Few in the room, including the organizers, appeared to know what to do.

After selecting a deputy for the Supreme Council — the vote for the only candidate was unanimous — an official announced that people were needed to staff various departments. A young man walked to the front of the auditorium, took the microphone and said he wanted a job.

"I want to do something with agriculture," he said. His campaign speech was short: "Will you vote for me? Please support me."

A few hands went up, apparently votes in his favor, but someone else grabbed the microphone and asked the man to sit down. Other people stood to make speeches. An angry man wanted to discuss a possible constitution. The new deputy speaker spoke about the need to find experts for the foreign ministry.

As the situation grew increasingly chaotic, Pushilin, facing the gathering from the stage, took the microphone.

"You are acting like you are in a kindergarten and not a Supreme Council!" he said, glaring at the room, which quickly went silent. Many people hung their heads. "I feel ashamed."

Minutes later, the session was adjourned. There was no word if the young man's hopes for a job had materialized.

200 cars stolen in Germany 'now owned by Tajik elite'

Berlin (AFP) - About 200 cars stolen in Germany have been tracked down in Tajikistan, where most are now driven by family and friends of President Emomali Rakhmon, media and officials in Berlin said Thursday.

The case of the German-registered cars, including 93 BMWs located via their GPS systems, has caused friction between Germany and the Central Asian country, mass-circulation daily Bild reported.

The German foreign ministry did not confirm it had called in the Tajik ambassador over the case, but a spokeswoman said "there have been talks with the Tajik side on cooperation in fighting organised crime".

OSLO (Reuters) - The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) , a relatively small organisation with a modest budget, is the global chemical weapons watchdog working to eliminate chemical arms stockpiles around the battlefields of Syria's civil war won the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

Kim Jong-un's ex-girlfriend appears to have risen from the dead with reports she was seen on North Korean state television for the first time since she was reportedly executed in 2013.

The North Korean former love interest was said to have been executed in September last year, alongside dozens of singers and dancers, for making a pornographic film.

But the story, published by the country's own newspapers, is being questioned after Hyon Song-wol made an appearance on television.

The reports in South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper indicate that Hyon Song-wul, a singer with the Unhasu Orchestra, was among those arrested on August 17 for violating domestic laws on pornography.

“They were executed with machine guns while the key members of the Unhasu Orchestra, Wangjaesan Light Band and Moranbong Band as well as the families of the victims looked on,” said a Chinese source reported in the newspaper.

Chinese officials 'set 1,000 cats loose in forest'

Beijing (AFP) - Animal activists are combing a forest in eastern China for more than 1,000 kittens rescued from a meat supplier only to be let loose by local authorities, an organiser said Monday.

Animal protection volunteers and local police intercepted a truck "filled with cats" destined for dinner plates last week, said an activist surnamed Ni from the Wuxi Small Animal Protection Association in eastern Jiangsu province.

But local government officials released the felines -- some as young as four months old -- into a nearby mountain forest to fend for themselves, Ni said.

"They were being sent to Guangzhou to be eaten by people," he told AFP.

China zoo under fire for disguising dog as lion

BEIJING — A Chinese zoo's supposed "African lion" was exposed as a fraud when the dog used as a substitute started barking.

The zoo in the People's Park of Luohe, in the central province of Henan, replaced exotic exhibits with common species, according to the state-run Beijing Youth Daily.

It quoted a customer surnamed Liu who wanted to show her son the different sounds animals made -- but he pointed out that the animal in the cage labelled "African lion" was barking.

The beast was in fact a Tibetan mastiff -- a large and long-haired breed of dog.

"The zoo is absolutely cheating us," the paper quoted Liu, who was charged 15 yuan ($2.45) for the ticket, as saying. "They are trying to disguise the dogs as lions."

Three other species housed incorrectly included two coypu rodents in a snake's cage, a white fox in a leopard's den, and another dog in a wolf pen.

The chief of the park's animal department, Liu Suya, told the paper that while it does have a lion, it had been taken to a breeding facility and the dog -- which belonged to an employee -- had been temporarily housed in the zoo over safety concerns.

Users of China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo service mocked the zoo.

"This is not funny at all. It's sad for both the zoo and the animals," said one.

"They should at least use a husky to pretend to be a wolf," said another.

Argentine MP pulled over for traffic offence makes a call to get policewoman fired.

Government minister Juan Cabandie remonstrated with Buenos Aires officer, Belen Mosquera, in an unsuccessful bid to escape paying the fine he faced.

The footage shows him telling the officer that he was a son of 'los desaperecidos' in reference to his parents being kidnapped by the military junta during Argentina's so-called Dirty War.

He told Ms Mosquera: 'You think you are brave, well I am braver. I survived the dictatorship, I am the son of The disappeared.'

But an unmoved Ms Mosquera, 28, told Cabandie that she was only doing her job and attempted to get him to sign the fine for driving while uninsured.

Cabandie was unaware that a colleague of the officer was filming the exchange and he was caught on camera accusing her of trying to get money out of him in return for avoiding the fine.

In the edited clip, he is then seen to make a phone call to 'Martin's office', believed to be Martin Insurralde, the mayor of the Lomas de Zamora municipality of Buenos Aires.

He is heard to say: 'Pass this information to Martin, not to get her sacked but so that she gets disciplined , because this is an affront'

Within days, Ms Mosquera had lost her job.

One Facebook user said: 'It's an awesome glimpse into how rotten, abusive and stupidly corrupt these 'Socio-democrats' are.'
