If you needed more proof that art theft is a futile, dead-end job, look no further than the Kunsthal heist of 2012.  After the theft of seven masterpieces worth tens of millions of dollars; a Picasso, two Monets, and a Matisse, among others—it appears that the mother of one of the suspects said she burned their cache of high-priced art partly because the thieves couldn't find any buyers.

"A Romanian museum is analyzing ashes found in a stove to see if they are the remains of seven paintings by Picasso, Matisse, Monet and others that were stolen last year from the Netherlands," reports the Associated Press, which adds that the ashes were found in the stove of one Olga Dogaru, the mother of prime suspect Radu Dogaru.

OOOOPS! part 1

Bye bye Banksy!

Banksy's artworks fetch hundreds of thousands of pounds and his graffiti is strewn across cities around the world.
But one man mistook the street art splashed on the side of his Muslim centre as vandalism and set about disguising it with white paint.
Unbeknown to Saeed Ahmed the ‘Gorilla in a Pink Mask’ stencil had been a familiar landmark in the artist's hometown of Bristol for over 10 years.

'I didn’t it know it was valuable. That’s why I painted over it. I really am sorry if people are upset.'

OOOOPS! part 2

la reve

Casino mogul Steve Wynn ruined a 74-year Picasso painting call Le Reve. While entertaining David and Mary Boies, Nora Ephron and Nick Pileggi, Louise Grunwald, and Barbara Walters, Steve winded up putting his elbow into the lower right quadrant of the painting.

“So then I made a gesture with my right hand,” Wynn said, “and my right elbow hit the picture. It punctured the picture.” There was a distinct ripping sound. Wynn turned around and saw, on Marie-Thérèse Walter’s left forearm, in the lower-right quadrant of the painting, “a slight puncture, a two-inch tear. We all just stopped. I said, ‘I can’t believe I just did that. Oh, shit. Oh, man.’ ”

Now that’s some expensive elbow. From a sale of $139 million, Steve has to now pay to restore it. Wynn bought the painting in 1997 for $48M and sold in 2013 for $155M.

According to the indictment, Roslales sold the phoney paintings over a 15-year period - 1994 to 2009 - and made more than $33million in profits selling the paintings to Manhattan-based art galleries.

In all, Rosales sold 63 phoney paintings to two New York City galleries.

The galleries then sold the paintings to customers for millions of dollars each.

According to the indictment, victims paid more than $80million collectively for the fake paintings, only to find out later that they were fake.
